The results of the survey
All videos about the Covid-19 pandemic
The study found that schools mainly used public resources for surface disinfection activities, while consideration of the scientific evidence requiring investment to improve air quality was limited. Specifically, in schools, the reliance was most on the “open windows” protocol, while relying less on air purification and filtration equipment. Only in 9 cases were controlled mechanical ventilation systems installed. Furthermore, the Anp and Gimbe data show that in almost half of the cases (46%) the educational institutions have not received any information, from the Ministry or ASL, about the widespread transmission of the virus by aerosol and about devices or systems for ventilation school environments; while the information only related to both subjects in 14.8% of the cases.
Difficulty tracking activities
Difficulty tracking activities was also evident in the study, with ASL delays in one in three cases in activating the procedures for which they are responsible. 76.2% of the structures involved also stated that they had received surgical masks in excess of the required quantities. Instead, the Italian schools “promoted” for hand hygiene, for 98.7% availability of dispensers in the appropriate rooms, 92.9% of standardized procedures and 91.6% of training interventions for school staff and students partly for temperature control. “The results of the survey provide an objective picture of the measures implemented to increase Covid-19 security in schools and reveal various critical issues that should hopefully be resolved before the start of the 2022-2023 school year”, commented Giannelli and President of the Gimbe Foundation, Nino Cartabellotta. Moreover, they added, “unlike last school year, some preventive interventions are “blunt”: the effectiveness of the vaccine against the infection was found to be lower in the 5-11 year group than in the older age groups and the current coverage (with two doses) has stopped at around 35%, with significant regional differences, while the third dose has not yet been approved by Ema; secondly, with such an infectious variant as Omicron 5, the tracing activities are of limited utility; finally, less than 1% of infections are due contact with infected surfaces, while the role of airborne diffusion and the importance of ventilation systems are now clear”.
Vaccines, information activities in 46.8% schools
Regarding vaccinations, the survey showed that 46.8% of schools carried out information activities about the anti-Covid-19 vaccination campaign aimed at students and parents, while 21.5% involved students only. Only 31.7% of schools did not carry out any promotion on the student vaccination campaign compared to the Ministry of Education. The local health authorities, on the other hand, have only carried out vaccinations in the school premises in 11.9% of cases, and 45.1% of the managers of the schools where it has not been carried out do not consider this initiative to be relevant to increase vaccination coverage. probably because the current legislation does not facilitate such experiences”, Giannelli commented. On the other hand, the timing was respected for quarantine measures in about two-thirds of the cases, while devices were purchased for temperature measurement in 96.5% of the cases, although the measurement in almost 40% of cases were delegated to families Finally, FFp2 masks were worn by all students for the entire expected duration in 97.4% of cases and distancing was possible in 66.6% of cases.
