Hotel Windsor, rebirth of design and taste on the beach of Laigueglia

p.located along the beach of Laigueglia, a picturesque fishing village in the province of Savona, Hotel Windsor reopened in June 2022 after almost twenty years. An hour from Sanremo and the French border, it is the ideal place to experience the Italian summer away from the crowdsenjoying an impeccable welcome and enjoy the Riviera’s dolce vita in a modern way.

Family business project

The entrepreneurial project bears the signature of Alessandro Sironi, founder and general manager, and is based on a very specific idea: to restore life to a destination fashionable in the sixties through a careful restoration that combines modern design and retro atmospheres. Attracted by the beauty and typically Italian places still unknown to international tourism, Sironi – flanked by his wife, the architect Alice Muzzioli for the creative direction and by the Blesi Subitoni studio for the interior – aims to create a unique travel experience, a place where authenticity and simplicity are the characteristic elements.

Algida Dolce Vita

Born at the end of the nineteenth century

Born at the end of the nineteenth century with the name Pensione Luciano – then renamed Hotel Concordia and finally Hotel Windsor -, the hotel has undergone a skillful restoration which pays tribute to the sixties, the golden age of the Ligurian Riviera, and fits harmoniously into the landscape with a modern and timeless style. It is associated with Design Hotels and offers minimal decor with decorative elementssuch as the seminato floor, the geometric boiserie in canaletto walnut and the brass details, while retaining the original facade, elegantly decorated in shades of beige and sage green, creating a pleasant contrast to the interior, where the design is absolute. the main character.

The common areas on the ground floor – hall, room in front of the bar and the restaurant – are characterized by large windows overlooking the sea and furnished with iconic pieces signed by Italian masters of the twentieth century – such as the Marocca chairs by Vico Magistretti for De Padova – and by contemporary designers , such as the Wild chairs designed by Piero Lissoni for Bonacina 1889 and the lighting by Davide Groppi.

Twenty-five rooms

The 25 bedrooms overlook the sea or the picturesque alleys of Laigueglia and are divided into seven categories, for an ever-changing experience. Among these, the Wellness Room stands out, equipped with a mezzanine with bathtub, the Deluxe, with a double corner terrace overlooking the Gulf of Alassio and the island of Gallinara, and the Junior Suite, a seafront apartment with bathroom overlooking the bedroom and corridor. – in the cabinet. All rooms are furnished with custom-made furniture, design items – among gems, the Pa ‘1947 desk by Ico Parisi and the 699 Superleggera chair by Gio Ponti for Cassina – and works of art created ad hoc, such as the splendid reinterpretations of the traditional Moorish heads, adapted with details reminiscent of the Ligurian territory, by atelier Ovo.

At the restaurant, the local fish is the protagonist

The restaurant, which has 40 seats inside and 20 on the terrace, is ideal for a gourmet lunch or dinner, thanks to the culinary offer that is a perfect combination of Ligurian flavors, traditional Italian dishes and avant-garde creations. The connection between food and “genius loci” is at the heart of the gastronomic proposal, which improves the raw material, especially the local fishbut also meat from the backcountry, vegetables and zero kilometer vegetables, all seasoned with a magnificent view.

At the head of the brigade is chef Gianluigi Erme. Born in 1988, of Lazio origin, after several experiences abroad in renowned restaurants such as Lasarte in Barcelona and Vila Joya in Portugal, chef Erme returns to Italy as sous chef at the restaurant A Spurcacciuna in Savona; follows a stop at Enrico Bartolini’s Trattoria in Castiglione della Pescaia (GR) before returning to Ponente Ligure, where he begins his adventure in the kitchens of the Hotel Windsor, alternating the acquired techniques with an excellent knowledge of local ingredients, also based on direct relations with small producers in the area.

The dishes to taste

Among the starters, the lamb tartare with fresh sea lettuce and katsuobushi sauce and the egg yolk marinated in Savona chinotto, egg white with tarragon and purple asparagus from Albenga stand out. Alongside the pasta dishes, including crepes filled with Brigasca mutton and trombetta courgettes, there is always a risotto on the menu, like the summer one with finger lime, mullet and capers.
For lovers of fish main courses, don’t miss the Ligurian red tuna with purple Albenga asparagus, Bernese sauce and wild herbs. For the dishes, the wine list is inspired by Italian excellence, which includes still whites, reds and rosés, where selected niche producers appear alongside the best-known names in the area. There is no shortage of both Italian and French bubbles, with the most recognized champagnes.

The reference to design is also found in mise en place with plates, placemats and cutlery scraps signed by atelier Ovo. The bright colors and shapes of the Ichendorf Milano glasses play down and bring a touch of color to the table, creating a deliberate contrast to the restaurant’s soft tones and architectural sobriety.

At the sea view bar with a cocktail list of local products

The bar on the seafront welcomes guests throughout the day and is enriched in the evening with an aperitif proposal accompanied by snacks straight from the restaurant’s kitchen. The cocktail list is classic, but enhanced by the use of local products such as the Ipa beer from Birrificio del Golfo, Gin Mä, Vermouth Pineo and limoncino “U Limunin” from Bruzzone. The lounge area has an airy view of the sea and is the ideal place to relax with a drink at the end of the day or after dinner, pampered by the sound of the waves. The coffee ritual also pays tribute to design thanks to the choice to offer specialty coffee from 1895 Coffee Designers by Lavazza. The excellence of the coffee is expressed in different extraction methods – Espresso, Moka, Chemex and Cold Brew – which make it possible to consume it throughout the day, from breakfast to after meals, up to a refreshing break on the beach.

The beach and surroundings

Between the hotel and the waves of the Ligurian Sea stretches the private sandy beach with a view that sweeps from Capo Mele to the island of Gallinara. The establishment flashes Sixties style, thanks to the beige umbrellas made to measure by Italian craftsmen, combined with the Kettal designer beds in shades of sage green. For those who want to experience the sea in an active way, the hotel organizes boat trips to the island of Gallinara and whale watching activities, also providing guests with kayaks and paddle boards. For enthusiasts, the suggestive Garlenda Golf Club, surrounded by pine forests and old olive trees, can be reached in just 15 minutes by car. From shopping in the elegant boutiques of nearby Alassio to scenic walks on the green hills overlooking the bay, passing through the village of Colla Micheri to the Capo Mele observatory, there are many activities to do during your stay at the Windsor Hotel.

The face behind rebirth

Born in 1987, Alessandro Sironi was born into the catering and hotel world. Growing up in the family restaurant Il Grillo in Capiago Intimiano in the Como province, he approached this universe from an early age. Educated from the classical high school, he continued his career at the École Hôtelière de Glion in Switzerland, a true institution in the sector. After several experiences abroad, he moved to Miami, where he began working at the Setai Hotel. In 2015 he opened the Filario Hotel & Residences in Lezzeno on Lake Como, the result of his innate passion for hospitality and hospitality, but also of his love for architecture, travel and beauty. In 2022, he began his second entrepreneurial adventure, Hotel Windsor, not surprisingly right on the beach in Laigueglia, where as a child he spent the summers with his family.
