From Formula E to the return to the competitions reserved for grand touring originating from the series, where the house of the Trident will make a fine show with the MC20s prepared according to the technical dictates of the GT2 class. On the occasion of the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, held on the weekend of July 31, Maserati announced the return to racing on the track in the GT field: a double front from the 2023 season. “Let’s go back to racing – he explains Giovanni Tommaso Sgro, head of Maserati Corse, met in Spa -. It is our philosophy, and a natural choice given our history”.

MASERATI CORSE: THE RETURN

The announcement of the GT2 program – cars derived from road models with a range of very accurate mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics – recalled among the enthusiasts the successes conquered by the Maserati MC12, a racing car that in the early years of the third millennium was the queen of the Fia GT endurance championship. Another era, different cars, the same passion and expertise for high speed. The new agreement with history is set for the 2023 season, when the Emilian marque will debut in Formula E and in the European series reserved for GT2, run as a support race in GT World Challenge Europe, offering customers a high-performance car based on the MC20 , which is equipped with the 3-liter Neptune V6 engine capable of delivering 630 horsepower, coupled with the 6-speed sequential transmission. “We wanted to go back to GT racing – continues Sgro – and the choice of the GT2 platform is perfect: it allows us to develop a very high performance, very competitive car. When will we debut? In the middle of 2023 season it may be at 24 Hours of Spa, but we will only define it in the coming months. We will have at least 5-10 machines ready and delivered to customers for this debut”.

MASERATI AND THE TRACK: A HISTORICAL COMBINATION

For Trident, the relationship with the asphalt on the circuits is a long-standing story. The company founded in 1914 has been successful and is finally back in the spotlight. “The development of the GT2 class MC20 sees Andrea Bertolini in the front row, who for us is an added value: he followed the project from A to Z” said Sgro, referring to the Emilian driver born in 1973, three times Fia GT champion and one world champion in Fia GT1 always with the Modena manufacturer (Bertolini is also involved with Ferrari both as a test driver and as a GT driver). The car in the GT2 category, developed in full memory of the “dynamic simulator we have at our headquarters, the Innovation Lab in Modena – he added Matilda La Guardia, Maserati’s Racing Project Manager -, enters an intense development phase from September 2022. Then it is the development on the track, a final part dedicated to details. Thanks to the virtual technologies at our disposal, we have actually been able to shorten the whole process considerably”.

GT AND FORMULA E: PARALLEL PLANES

Meanwhile, Maserati Corse is close to appearing on the stage of the Formula E World Championship, starting from the 2023 season, as the first Italian manufacturer to launch the electric single-seater series. “The two programs complement each other – details the head of the sports department Giovanni Tommaso Sgro -. We do not limit ourselves to just one championship. On the one hand electric races, on the other hand those with heat engines. The key point is to compete at a high level , renew our history, our brand’s emblem on the track. FE will help us enormously in transporting our range of road cars to electric, as well as fueling the dreams and desires of our customers”. Finally, Sgro describes the creation of Project24, the hypercar in only 62 units, for track use, another (extreme) version of the MC20. “A 740 horsepower car that demonstrates our technical capabilities and reference for weight/power ratio (dry mass is 1,250 kg, ed.)”. A dream car for sale at 940,000 euros, for lucky enthusiasts and collectors.
