Would you walk like a fakir barefoot on a carpet with nails? Here is the picture that can make us understand how a tire can get punctures and tears if it crosses a field after the harvest, where the most robust stalks, the so-called “stumps”, can be a serious problem.
The reasons are many, but there is only one solution: use compounds and structural devices that make the tire more resistant, because the phase immediately after harvest and dry plowing are the conditions where there is the greatest risk of punctures.
Seed companies, such as corn, soy, cotton and canola, have developed genetically modified crops that maintain stability and high winds, withstand large temperature variations, resist disease and pest attacks.
But the counterpart of a robust crop is an equally robust, extremely rigid grapple, as operators must equip the machines with special tools and, above all, with highly resistant and performance tires.
Stumps damage tires in the sidewall and tread areas, especially at the bottom of the grooves. When it is passed over it, by rubbing, large pieces of rubber are removed, a condition which cannot always be repaired.
There are, of course, techniques to reduce or prevent the problem: cutting the stalks higher at harvest time, for example by letting the tire pass over the stalks in a non-penetrating location, or by using stump diversion devices, such as rammers, which help push the residue , before they pass.
There are also solutions for the tires themselves, and BKT has experimented and introduced several ways to minimize damage.
The most effective interventions concern highly resistant specific compounds and structural changes in the body of the tyre.
An excellent solution is the use of aramid belts, a fiber five times stronger than steel, characterized by high tensile strength. These belts also allow a better uniformity of the product on the ground and at the same time guarantee a better resistance to punctures.
Sensitive to this particular theme, BKT has been working on its conventional and radial tires for some years, proposing innovative versions Aramid Belted, i.e. with belts in
aramid for greater resistance to punctures and Special, where the compound ensures extraordinary resistance to tearing.

On the other hand, when it is time to plough, and the machines are normally equipped with Flotation tyres, precisely for better weight distribution and support, BKT also proposes specific products in this case, the conventional FLOTATION 558 and FLOTATION 648, which are already standard Aramid Belt HD to avoid punctures, especially in the case of resistant stubble.
FLOTATION 558 is a crossover tire that is suitable for combines and round balers, both on and off-road.
FLOTATION 648 is particularly suitable for field transport as well as spreading applications.
Both have a high tensile strength; the special design of the tread allows the transport of very heavy loads at low pressure, which guarantees a reduced compaction of the soil and at the same time protects the crops from damage. Specifically, the rounded profile that characterizes these tires and typical of bias products is an excellent ally to use in the field.
Also from BKT are radial tires for agricultural implements and trailers, which have already incorporated the use of various stub resistance technologies.
