These are really important days on an emotional level for Iga Swiatek.
After being moved by the huge devotion shown by the tens of thousands of people who helped make the “Iga Swiatek and Friends” event in Krakow special last Saturday, today, as the number 1 in the world, she took the field in Warsaw in the debut match of the Polish WTA 250 tournament.
The bracket on the grass at Wimbledon, which ended in the third round with a clear defeat against Alizé Cornet, is now dated a month ago. After spending a few days of vacation between Northern Italy and Austria, present in the stands of the F1 Grand Prix in Spielberg, he then concentrated everything in the final promotional tranche to organize an event he was very keen on. Always with a rather important focus on social issues, Swiatek, with the help of his team, created a day of celebration at the Arena Tauron in Krakow together with Agnieszka Radwanska, Sergyi Stakhovski, Elina Svitolina and Andryi Shevchenko to raise funds to be allocated to humanitarian associations to help Ukrainian children to a country that has been under constant bombardment for more than five months.
The result was beyond imagination, bringing together all the income they achieved to a total of 2.5 million zlotys, equivalent to over 530,000 euros. A sum that somehow confirms the specific weight that his figure has assumed at the age of just 21 years. A leader who was praised by his colleagues for the streak of 37 consecutive victories, but also for the moral qualities that have not only been shown in recent months. And today, for the first time, Poland saw a world number 1 on the court in a home tournament. Swiatek, who grew up in these areas, was greeted by a roar of nearly 4000 people for her debut match at the WTA 250 in Warsaw, a tournament that, of course, practically lives on her shoulders.
In terms of tennis, the period is quite stingy with emotion. The weeks that separate Wimbledon from the first real tournaments on North American hard is a passage that does not warm the hearts of many tennis players, but this week there is a pure combination of both the number 1 and number 2 in the world. , with Anett Kontaveit, who after the long period due to covid-19 has received two wild-cards between Hamburg and Prague and has already reached the final in Germany and passed the first round in the Czech Republic.
Against Swiatek there was, among others, Magdalena Frech with a Polish derby that was very valuable to them. The same Frech, in addition to the clear 6-1 6-2 final immediately, did everything to try to make a good impression by clinging to the weapons that can have between a first unassailable and a sudden dampening for to surprise the opponent. However, Swiatek took four games to adjust his game and from the break 3-1 with a 4-1 extension the first set was already in the safe. In the second, Iga had to wait a bit, because in the third point of the first game she did everything very well in pushing, Frech defended herself well anyway, and on the last defensive recovery she put a rather dirty ball to hit, jumped over the net Almost on sideline, and on which Swiatek has completely fenced his forehand and loses concentration. However, from 2-1 to his opponent, Iga started again, realized the point at 2-2 at the third chance and from there flew towards the seventeenth consecutive victory this season over red. 17-0, given the titles in Stuttgart, Rome and Paris earlier today.
In the second round another fight on the affordable card against the Romanian lucky loser Gabriela Lee.
Sara Errani progressed to the second round, progressing from the qualifiers to put herself 6-1 5-7 6-4 against Arantxa Rus with the final shudder remaining from the Dutchman who from 0-5 down climbed to 4-5 40- 0 before giving up five straight points. Jasmine Paolini and Elisabetta Cocciaretto are also in the second round: the Tuscan is now waiting for Clara Burel, the other transalpine Caroline Garcia from the Marches.
