Road recycling: crushing of concrete and milling of asphalt

Germany has an extensive and well-maintained road network. The federal agency under the German Ministry of Transport and the local municipalities invest huge public funds every year to keep this national heritage in perfect condition, consisting of roads of various types.

There are “Bundesstraßen”, i.e. roads of national interest, “Landesstraßen”, roads of interest to the federal states, “Kreisstraßen”, provincial roads that direct traffic to the cities of a single district or neighboring districts, and “Gemeindestraßen” of local importance. It goes without saying that numerous private companies dealing with road maintenance have also sprung up.

One of these is Franz Blum GmbH Tief- und Straßenbau based in Ittenhausen, Baden-Württemberg. The company, which employs 35 employees, owns a FAE MTM / HP multifunction machine ( -construction / mtm-mtm-hp), which he recently used on two construction sites located at an altitude of 800 m in the Swabian Jura (in German Schwäbisch Alb), a mountainous region between Stuttgart and Ulm.

In both locations, the use of a multi-functional machine capable of performing multiple operations proved crucial: in this case, stabilizing the soil and milling or crushing both asphalt and concrete.

Recycling of concrete

“On the first construction site, we were asked to reuse and crush a local road made with 16 cm thick non-reinforced concrete on site” – says the owner of the company, Lothar Blum. “The road showed several signs of deterioration with potholes and depressions that made it difficult to follow. We had to crush the existing concrete, stabilize the resulting material and prepare it to accommodate the new asphalt pavement.

Considering the strength of the road, which is 16 cm thick, it was first necessary to remove the concrete pavement with an excavator in a grid of about 40 × 40 cm. The MTM cutter then succeeded in crushing the concrete and achieving a grain size of 0/60 mm.

A total of 1,500 m was treated2 concrete. We combined the FAE MTM/HP with our Fendt 936 tractor and achieved a high performance duo which allowed us to finish the job on time”.

Recycling of asphalt

At another construction site nearby, Franz Blum GmbH Tief- und Straßenbau took care of the cold recycling of the asphalt pavement on a municipal road. “In this case, we were asked to process 1,600 m2 of asphalt (pavement thickness approx. 10 cm) for an on-site recycling operation” – continues Mr. Blum. “We worked with MTM / HP, always combined with the Fendt 936 tractor, up to a depth of 40 cm, with a working speed of 0.2 to 0.6 km/h.

The grain size of the processed material was approx. 0/60. In this case too, we were very satisfied with the work: Our general comment on FAE MTM is therefore positive for both yards”.

Recycling in the road construction sector

In general, recycling in the road construction sector – often required by various national regulations – has several advantages.

The first is the possibility to immediately recycle the material from the milling of the old road surface and use it to create the new surface. All without the extra costs due to traditional building methods and with a procedure with an absolutely reduced ecological impact.

The benefits therefore range from saving time and money to a more sustainable effort for the environment.

Suffice it to say that the classic method involves removing the old road surface, transporting it and disposing of it in landfills or treating it in a specialized facility, purchasing new material and transporting it from the quarry to the site of use. Overall, the savings by reusing the old concrete or asphalt on site can be up to 400%.

Thanks to the FAE multifunction machines, it is easier to carry out recycling on site, and the same machine can later be used for different tasks.


FAE MTM / HK is suitable for tractors from 300 to 360 HP and has a maximum working depth of 40 cm. The compact dimensions and extreme maneuverability mean that it can work on surfaces that are difficult to reach with self-propelled machines and on even small construction sites.

The shredding chamber with variable geometry, a unique FAE technological solution in the sector, guarantees optimal results in terms of crushing.

This technology has two important advantages. On the one hand, it allows you to penetrate the soil only with the rotor through the movable frame, which can be adjusted hydraulically from the tractor cab with great precision. On the other hand, the volume of the mixing chamber is variable: the deeper you work, the more the volume of the chamber increases and the ability to handle the material to be mixed.

In addition, the FAE heads with variable geometry chamber reduce the traction effort with a consequent reduction in fuel consumption, increased operating speed and greater stability of the machine on the ground.

Another important technical feature is the presence – among the optional equipment – of WSS (Water Spray System) High Flow and FCS (Full Control System) water injection systems. On MTM / HP they are particularly useful because:

  • they stabilize the temperature of the tools, reduce their wear and increase their duration;
  • they prevent overheating and thus ensure continuous productivity over time and reduce the risk of machine downtime;
  • contain/reduce the amount of dust from crushing/recycling, enabling optimal work in an urban environment or on busy roads.

The FAE MTM / HP is also equipped with an anti-wear Hardox® counter blade, which, together with the grid on the rear hood, guarantees the desired grain size of the starting material.
