what the Italian study says

What do we know about Long Covid, the long-term effects of Coronavirus

Fatigue, neurological problems such as difficulty concentrating, fog and headache, anxiety, depression and respiratory symptoms, these are the main symptoms experienced by the almost 700 children and adolescents who are the subject of pediatric research conducted throughout Italy. Long-term Covid recovery is possible, the symptoms can be treated, and the impact of the disease subsides 2 to 9 months after recovery from Covid.

What do we know about Long Covid, the long-term effects of Coronavirus

24% of the pediatric population who have passed the acute phase of Covid with mild or no symptoms suffer from disorders related to Sars-CoV-2 infection, a symptom complex called Long Covid, at least 2 months after recovery and up to 9 months from the same.

The figures for the research conducted by the study group coordinated by Professor Enrico Bertino, by Dr. Giulia Maiocco (Neonatologist in Turin), by Dr. Gianfranco Trapani (ASL1 Sanremo – Imperia), by Professor Vassilios Fanos (University of Cagliari) and by Professor Giuseppe Verlato (University of Verona) are impressive: Over 650 children and adolescents who became ill with COVID between October 2020 and June 2021 were examined in 8 Italian regions: 24% of those who passed COVID with mild or no symptoms suffer from covid-related disorders up to 9 months later.

Has developed symptoms in the acute phase significantly increase the risk of prolonged COVIDwhich brings it from 11.5% to 46.5%, while concomitant diseases such as asthma and allergic rhinitis do not cause any additional risk.

A new study confirms that vaccinated people are more protected against Long Covid: with 3 doses, the risk drops to 16%

“What little is said about Long Covid – says Dr. Gianfranco Trapani, first signatory of the research and author of dozens of books dedicated to children and young people – is that Long Covid heals perfectly. “Every time a symptom appears, it is sufficient to work with pharmacological therapies or psychological therapies, and after 2-9 months, Long Covid ceases to have an effect on the organism”.

“This research – explains Dr. Trapani – was born thanks to families who when they saw something wrong with their children, they took them to the pediatrician. This alliance between attentive families and trained pediatricians has enabled us to identify Long Covid in such a large number of patients. What was most criticized in this research was the absence of serious symptoms, such as multisystem deficiency and pericarditis, which we did not find because, fortunately, they are actually very rare diseases. “

“By pure coincidence, the day after the end of the study, I had a young patient who had developed pericarditis from Covid, whom he then got rid of with the appropriate treatment, and who I could not include in the study. The vaccine against Covid – continues Dr. Trapani that is not the specific purpose of this study, but we noticed milder symptoms in vaccinated children and adolescents“explains.

The data confirm and consolidate the value of the recommendations expressed by the Italian Society of Pediatrics and by numerous other pediatric scientific societies: Children and adolescents who have received COVID, even if mild, should be supervised by their parents and in case of symptoms they should always be visited by the pediatrician.

The symptoms that the young patients most frequently complained about were in order: fatigue (7%), neurological problems – difficulty concentrating, fog and headache – (6.8%) and respiratory symptoms (6%).

The incidence of long COVID has almost doubled in older children and adolescents compared to the youngest, which goes from 18.3% (0-5 years) to 21.3% (6-10 years), up to with 34.4% risk (11-16 years).

In the older age group, the most typical symptoms may be associated anxiety, agitation, sleep and behavioral disorders. The only type of Long Covid pathology found more frequently in early childhood is the respiratory, with 11.4% risk in the 0-5 year range versus 3.8% after 6.

As the authors of the study emphasize, the results confirm the importance of vaccination in the pediatric age as a preventive tool, even from the beginning of long covid pathology.
