Trieste, July 4, 2022– From the joy of going to sea to “living” in a city like Trieste, from respect to spaciousness, to curiosity and spontaneity: Barcolana’s values, its hopes, the relationship with its participants are told in a single image that is not just a manifesto , but a manifesto of the values of the regatta.
After Michelangelo Pistoletto (2015), Gillo Dorfles (2016), Maurizio Galimberti (2017), Marina Abramović (2018), Olimpia Zagnoli (2019), Lorenzo Mattotti (2020) and Ron Arad (2021), illycaffè, who is entrusted with artistic direction for the realization of the Barcolana poster, he opted for the 54th edition of the largest regatta in the world, the line of Italian designer and architect, Matteo Thun.
“Barcolana represents to me the joy of human commitment. I wanted to draw on the optimism of the regatta to create a manifesto that spoke to our human nature and expressed the importance of imprinting the human touch, respect, empathy and spontaneity in our world. The imprint on the illy cup that I drew 30 years ago carries a simple message: we leave a positive impression on the world” Matteo Thun explains.
The manifesto captures and summarizes the spirit with which Barcolana was conceived in 1969, the spirit that has guided the organizers of the Sailing Society of Barcola and Grignano for over 50 years. Matteo Thun was able to identify the characteristic elements – Barcolana’s DNA, expressed through fingerprint signs, where the lines of the footprint are reminiscent of ocean currents – which project the event beyond sailing and tell the universe of regatta values. Barcolana, in summary and in the end – Matteo Thun explains to us – is the joy of sharing a passion and thanks to this to cultivate common values.
“We are also happy to renew it‘years the collaboration with Barcolana, a unique event with which illycaffè shares a strong common root: the people and the territory” declared Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffès. “For the 54th edition, we have chosen to entrust the realization of the manifesto to Matteo Thun, who wanted to celebrate the spirit of the regatta through the metaphor of a‘fingerprint: a flow in which parallel lines flow, sometimes interrupted, forming a design reminiscent of ocean currents, capable of transmitting positive emotions and celebrating‘the importance of connections. ONE‘image that recognizes everything‘largest sailing event in the world, the ability to talk about common values, harmony between man and nature, spaciousness, empathy, respect and joy of life“.
“Matteo Thun’s manifesto for the 2022 edition“Commented on it President of the Sailors’ Association of Barcola and Grignano, Mitja Gialuz “it is a perfect synthesis of the deep values that underlie Barcolana. For navigators, currents are independent variables that must be taken into account when plotting the route. By defining the 54th edition, which comes after two years of pandemic, we rediscover precisely these values, from curiosity to vitality, from inclusiveness to respect. The picture also arouses an ear and reminds us of the need to listen. Listening to the people of Barcolana who want to return to fully experience the magic of the biggest regatta in the world“.
Barcolana is scheduled for October 9, 2022 in the Gulf of Trieste, starting at 10.30, prior to events on land and at sea starting on 30 September. Registration for the regatta is open from June 29 online on the site www.barcolana.it. Today, 400 posters and 4,000 postcards with poster graphics from the headquarters of the Barcola and Grignano Sailing Association, addressed to the same number of yacht clubs and owners who have participated in previous editions, will leave.
