Honda Civic and: HEV, the proof: the “alternative” hybrid for the whole family

Of all the automakers that have announced a halt to thermobile production, Honda has taken the longest time to complete the transition. The year in which the Japanese brand becomes 100% electric is 2040, but in the meantime it has also committed to electrifying the entire European range by 2022. And we are not talking about mild electrification, but about real full-hybrid systems. What we have tried on the new Civic is the latest development of a system that was born less than a decade ago on the CR-V. It is conceptually very different from other hybrids on the market because in most cases it only uses the petrol engine to generate electricity. The main components are the 1.05 kWh lithium-ion battery, two electric motors (one acts as a generator) and a 2-liter gasoline engine with direct injection and Atkinson cycle, which has an efficiency of 41%, which is the maximum, that is available today.

Power and maximum torque are 184 HP and 315 Nm, respectively, or the values of the electric motor, as the thermals only have 143 HP and 186 Nm. But, as we said, its task is to generate electricity, except in some situations in which it is connected directly to the wheels. This happens around between 80 and 120 km / h when the efficiency is maximum and the transmission can make the best possible use of the fixed gear ratio (to reduce friction). In practice, the Civic e: HEV is almost an electric one with the range extender, but since the battery is small, the petrol works often and not only in emergencies. Of course, there are the driving modes – Econ, Normal, Sport and Individual – to which is added the adjustment of the engine brake on four levels with the blades behind the wheel. The final result is very interesting, as the WLTP approved average consumption of 5 liters per. 100 km corresponds to the maximum speed of 180 km / h, the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h closed in 7.8 seconds.

To achieve these performances, one has to ask about everything from the hybrid system, which immediately increases the revs and becomes quite noisy, while in normal driving it is much more comfortable and pleasant. The last adjective can be used generally for driving the Civic e: HEV, which makes balance the best value: the steering has the right load and is not too geared down, the setup is the right middle ground to absorb the holes and properly supports a body that still exceeds four and a half meters. It is this extra length, along with the line with the just mentioned third volume, to indicate that the compact Honda is mainly oriented towards the US market as it tells its story of eleven generations and more than 27 million cars sold. Compared to the model it replaces, the style has become cleaner and more linear, with slimmer proportions thanks to the lowered bonnet, the A-pillar moved back and the wheelbase extended by 3.5 cm, which also increases the space on board.

Inside the Civic e: HEV you are always comfortable, both rear and front, with a well-adjustable driver’s seat and suitable for most body sizes. As for the technology on board, there is everything you need with a complete set of equipment already in the basic setup. The instrumentation is available in two 10.2-inch diagonal levels with a partially digital display or a fully digital HD and color display. The infotainment system’s touch screen, on the other hand, measures 9 inches and is compatible via wi-fi with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Finally, speaking of safety. In terms of active safety, there is the latest development of the Sensing system, which includes an unprecedented 360 ° wide-angle camera capable of recognizing and detecting pedestrians, traffic signs, borders and two-wheeled vehicles. Then there are the sonar sensors: four at the front and four at the rear. All this is to support impact reduction automatic braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind spot and maneuverable traffic monitoring and finally Traffic jam assist. Finally, passive safety can count on 11 airbags.
