One of the forces that made it possible ASST Pope John XXIII meeting the Covid-19 emergency with extreme operational flexibility was the presence of one female component numerous and articulate, both in the anti-covid crisis unit and in the widespread leadership. A positive factor that facilitated the rebuilding of existing services and the activation of additional services, also aimed at gender needs. This is the summary of the project “Be ‘one hour ahead of the virus’: Pope John’s women in the pandemic emergency between flexibility and integration “ that the direction of Pope John presented at the first edition of Leads Award – Women leaders in health, which gave the Hospital of Bergamo ex aequo victory in the category of accredited public and private bodies, in the opinion of the jury, led by Beatrice Lorenzin and composed of authoritative experts, including former ministers Renato Balduzzi and Maurizio Sacconi. The project is a model for good management practice and a dutiful tribute to the employees, 75% of the total number of partners. It also represents a starting point for reflection on the role of the “pink” component in the context of healthcare.
The outbreak of the pandemic forced Bergamo Hospital to a continuous ‘work in progress’. The ongoing reorganization of the departments to accommodate Covid-19 admissions was accompanied by the rapid activation of new services. Pope John has been identified as reference center for pregnant women and women in labor with Covid-19 disease or with simple positivity to the virus. The follow-up of pregnant and newborn women was followed thanks to the case management model, which is already active in many departments. Presence in the delivery room was guaranteed to the father of the unborn. The other parent was allowed to visit the pediatric areas. From the very first days, internal training courses were held to illustrate ways to assist and care for Covid-19 patients in safety. In the second pandemic wave, the family and local nurse were activated, which among other things helped to limit the infection in the area and to administer 600,000 anticovid vaccinations. All this was possible also thanks to the widespread leadership expressed by the female component at the organizational and decision-making level and the strong integration in the company in all health, administrative and technical roles.
There Prize plate was delivered during the ceremony of Monday, June 20th at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health in Rome by Patrizia Ravaioli, President of the Association of Women Leaders in Healthcare and in the presence of i.a. Giovanni Leonardi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health. The Director General was present for ASST Pope John XXIII Maria Beatrice Stasiwho expressed thanks: “I consider it a full recognition of our ASST for the relentless work that continues to fight the pandemic. There is no doubt that women in healthcare companies, also because today they represent the vast majority of the workforce in healthcare contexts, Has carried the greatest weight of the pandemic on their shoulders in their care, assistance and organization. Often a ‘war’ description of the pandemic prevailed, provoking leaders and battlefields. in Bergamo and in St. John White, was confronted with improving widespread leadership, the simplification of communication between hierarchical levels, the flexibility and the continuous integration to be ‘an hour ahead of the virus’ so as not to be overwhelmed by it. I also think it is thanks to the ‘pink’ culture that sets us apart as a healthcare company if we, with organizational flexibility, managed to strengthen and modulate existing services and withstand the enormous systemic load caused by the emergency from an organizational, psychological and professional point of view. of views. “
ONE ‘feminine’ culture which is reflected in a particular focus on women’s health and in the provision of services dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most important sex pathologies and cancers in the field of gynecology and breast care. Pope John XXIII specializes in handling the birth event and complex pregnancies. Also in the Covid year, it registered fourth place in Italy for the number of hospital admissions for childbirth (3,865, AGENAS data).

- Case processing: it is an organizational model that facilitates the clinical assistance process for patients in the wards. The service was also dedicated to COVID follow-up of pregnant women and women who have just given birth: 142 active caseworkers (130 women, 12 men)
- Family and local nurse: new figure activated from November 2020 on the occasion of the pandemic: 39 figures of which 36 women and 3 men
- Relations with the mediacommunication to the citizen, internal communication: sharp increase in requests for information, with journalistic requests extended to the national and international sphere: staff of 3 professionals (journalists and public communicators), of which 2 women
- The role that women play in management of the Bergamo trade fairwhich has had several functions in the various pandemic phases: Hospitalization of acute patients with high and low care intensity, follow-up of patients with Covid-19, vaccinations, vaccinations.
