Full-scale discussion, organized in Milan by Pio Albergo Trivulzio, on preventive and curative practices for elderly and frail patients in the light of recent experience and a look to the future

Training of young geriatricians, research and experiments, understanding the central importance of the disorder, total support for operators, the fundamental role of nurses and the CIS, and continuous dialogue with the territory and its institutions. This is the focus of Pio Albergo Trivulzio “designed” by Professor Marco Trabucchi, Scientific Director of the Brescia Geriatric Research Group, which opens the meeting on the care of the elderly and frail, held in Milan and organized by ASP Istituti Milanesi Martinitt e Stelline and Pio Albergo Trivulzio.

In his speech, Professor Trabucchi recalled the central role of Pio Albergo Trivulzio, the largest Italian geriatric institution, which over time has been able to expand its scope more and more in order to take care of the overall care of the elderly and their needs. . A high-level scientific reflection and comparison, underway in the San Fedele Auditorium, under the scientific guidance of Professor Claudia Balotta and Professor Trabucchi. A particularly important appointment because it takes place in a particular historical phase, after the acute and dramatic phase of the pandemic and in the light of the reforms of the PNRR. And in this sense, Professor Balotta reminded in his speech how the National Recovery and Resistance Plan does not give legitimacy to RSAs in health care interventions because it deinstitutionalizes elderly care towards greater domicile for the interventions thanks to community centers, but there is no doubt that this will not happen from one day to the next, and for this reason it does not appear to be a bet, but a necessity to take responsibility at 360 degrees, beyond the simple stay that PAT develops today.

The perimeter of the offer of elderly care, based on the experience of recent years, was the starting point for the report from Dr. Barbara Caimi from the Coordination Unit for Pio Albergo Trivulzio. Like the health care system around the world – Caimi recalled – PAT also went through hard times during the pandemic. But this period also represented to us a historical section from a past full of criticism with an insight into a future full of prospects. Caimi thus recalled the recent choices in terms of new technologies, internal communication, prevention, training and the implementation of innovative solutions for a management that is up to the challenge, such as the “bed manager” or the portal for management of disposal, up to the extraordinary results obtained by the Outpatient Clinic and vaccination campaigns.

The goal, as Caimi emphasizes, is to leverage the experience of the dramatic days of the pandemic to bolster the call for PAT, the most important geriatric center in Italy, because it is able to perfectly integrate the diversity of care offerings that arise from demand for territory. The day of discussion and study saw the important interventions of the rectors of Bocconi and Universit degli Studi di Milano, professors Gianmario Verona and Elio Franzini, as well as the in-depth analysis of fragility, with special reference to people with cognitive deficits and Alzheimer’s disease, by Professor Giuseppe Bellelli , from the University of Milan-Bicocca, the psychological consequences for health workers and a cognitive study of the psychological state of Trivulzio RSA guests during the pandemic of Professor Antonella Delle Fave and Dr. Fabiana Riva. The conference concludes with a roundtable discussion between health directors focusing on the perspectives and intersections between RSA and Community Homes proposed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
