The road to the activation in Vicenza of the new course in Design, organized by the Iuav University of Venice with the support of the University Studies Foundation of Vicenza, is coming to the heart.
In fact, pre-registrations are officially open, which closes on August 22, while entrance exams take place on August 30 and 31 (through tests and graphic tests on the first day and interviews on the second day of the selections). in relation to the projected 60 places for each annuity.
For potential beginners, an open day is also planned for July 14 at the Viale Margherita headquarters of the Vicenza University Complex, which will provide the opportunity to participate in a simulated lesson (“Summer Lessons” is the name chosen by Iuav for this original format) , as well as receive detailed information about the study plan and the content of the individual courses.
Also on the occasion of “Open Day” there will also be exhibited some drawings made by the students of Iuav and a series of tables with separate objects, giving a “taste” of a basic procedure for any designer.
Participation in Open Day will be free, after mandatory registration via email to email@example.com.
The didactic content
In this way, students have the opportunity to deepen the content of the new training course, which provides an interdisciplinary education in product design, through which it becomes possible to acquire skills to design products that are able to meet the needs and expectations of users from all points of view: in terms of ergonomics, functionality and aesthetics, in line with current macro trends towards an increasingly significant sustainability and digitalisation.
In more detail, students from the first semester of the first year will begin to become acquainted with the basics of design through the laboratory “Basic Design” and deepen the historical development of design and technology to continue in the second semester with a more advanced product design laboratory, alongside teaching in materials and frontier areas, such as inspiration that can come from botany for the purpose of innovation, as well as techniques for dealing with complexity and optimizing decision-making processes without neglecting the relationship between culture, innovation and society.
In the second year, design in relation to sustainability and digitization processes will be studied in depth, as well as in relation to aesthetics, in parallel with teaching business and management models.
A graphic design laboratory for the product and the teaching of computer science basically also enriches the second year program.
During the third year, students will further explore the design criteria in relation to sustainability and new technologies, with a focus also on packaging design and its implications for logistics. All enriched with in-depth seminars and workshops with companies.
New competencies for local companies
The relationship with the business community will be particularly close: application experiences will be completed in courses, laboratories and workshops, also trusted professionals among the most qualified nationally and internationally, while in the third year there will be an internship where students will be asked to apply the necessary skills to meet the design processes of a work team.
Attention is drawn to the potential of the new training course in terms of the competencies required by the companies Prof. Laura Badalucco, full professor of design and coordinator of the product design course:
“The training has been developed on the basis of the themes that characterize the new European industrial strategy, primarily sustainability and digitalisation as cornerstones of the future competitiveness of our production system.
We are actually going through a period of great economic and social transformation, which also involves the need for new products and new design criteria, therefore for new competencies.
The training in Design will train people who are able to design products in line with this development, especially with regard to the ecological transformation and digitization processes, which today increasingly go across the most diverse production sectors, and which will be at the center of the projects. and future development of manufacturing companies “.
A concept also emphasized by
Antonio Girardi, Vice President of the University Studies Foundation of Vicenza:
«Also in terms of this training course, the choice of responding to the needs of local businesses is crucial, with the development of skills that are able to help increase their competitiveness, through the numbers of graduates.
This bridge between university and business, for the benefit of young people, represents the historical goal that the founders (municipality, province and chamber of commerce) and supporters (region, Confindustria Vicenza and Viacqua) have assigned to the work of FSU ».
A new training course that has also become a reality thanks to the Local Government’s support:
»The local government has worked hard
in the strategic operation of assigning Palazzo San Biagio to the Iuav – he emphasizes Roberta Albiero, councilor for inheritance in Vicenza municipality – because bringing such a vital function as the university’s product design course to the historic center represents an opportunity for unique urban renewal, not only from a property point of view, but also from a social point of view.
The signed agreement definitively establishes the community of intent with the University Study Fund and goes hand in hand with the completion of the management project, which will give us the opportunity to begin the tender for the functional rebuilding of the building shortly “.
After the exam
At the end of the three-year course, graduates will be able to continue their studies in a master’s program or directly enter the world of work, strengthened by design and practical-applied knowledge – as well as methodical – to fill roles specifically oriented towards the design of products or services, both in companies and institutions, technical and research and development offices, production companies and in professional design and consulting companies operating in the design sector.
