For all lovers of Indian art and culture, SummerMela returns to celebrate its ten-year anniversary. This year, the festival, scheduled for 21 to 29 June 2022, will be located between the garden of Castel Sant’Angelo, Palazzo Rospigliosi in Zagarolo – as traditionally – and the open-air theater Ettore Scola in Giardini della Casa in the cinema.

SummerMela represents, since its birth, a unique opportunity on national territory to share and understand Indian culture in its oldest and most refined traditions, but also in its contemporary expression expressed by great interpreters of Indian culture, music and dance.

The festival will be inaugurated on Tuesday 21 June on the occasion of two famous international days: Yoga, which in the open areas of Castel Sant’Angelo will see a collective yoga session take place at. 18:00, and the International Music Day. , where the festival will propose the Indian classical music concert SUMMER RAGA with Apratim Majumdar on sarod and Amit Chatterjee on tabla. The concert – in collaboration with the Music Festival – includes in two stages a selection of some ragas that are traditionally associated with the summer season to celebrate the summer solstice.

On Thursday 23 June, Palazzo Rospigliosi in Zagarolo will host the second appointment of SummerMela with the performance of theater-dance and martial arts DEMONI E DEI, where 9 dancers of different origins and backgrounds will interpret maestro Dominique Delorme’s theatrical works. . A performance, scheduled at 20:00, which in an innovative and original way combines the languages of classical Indian dance theater and martial arts techniques (bharatanatyam dance, karana, kalaripayattu) with the languages of modern dance theater research, as taught by the great choreographer.

It will be Delorme himself who from 24 to 26 June will always in Zagarolo lead a Masterclass of Bharatanrtyam and Karana Dance (registration on the festival’s official website)

SummerMela ends on Wednesday 29 June with a special event in the outdoor spaces of the Casa del Cinema in Rome, Ettore Scola open-air theater, starting at 18:00. In fact, there will be three moments to share Indian culture, each of which will be dedicated to different artistic expressions.

The event opens with the presentation of the photographic book INDIA, DESIDERIO DI LUCE by photographer Mario D’Angelo, a volume published on the occasion of the festival’s ten-year anniversary, evoking the most striking moments of the performances that hosted the previous editions through pictures. A veritable visual diary of a cultural enterprise, the author’s pictures give readers a lasting impression of beauty and joy.

Afterwards, from around kl. 19.30, Maestro Rakesh Chaurasia, considered to be one of the main exponents of Hindustan classical music and virtuoso of bansuri (the bamboo flute of the Indian tradition), will perform the Indian classical music concert EVENING RAGA accompanied by tabla. by Sanjay Kansa Banik.

The evening ends at 21.00 with screening of one of the best known cult films from Indian classical culture: Baiju Bawra, which this year marks the 70th anniversary of its premiere in cinemas. The film, directed by Vijay Bhatt, was a surprising blockbuster with a completely classic soundtrack and won several awards.
