The activity in via dei Bacchettoni is today led by sisters Monica and Valentina

LUCCA. One hundred and fifty-five years of Lucca’s history. We are talking about “Spaziomariani”, the interior design showroom in via dei Bacchettoni at number 19, whose origins date back to 1867. A trade that begins and continues over the years with antiques and then handicrafts and a type of furniture in the classical sector, which is transformed into late 60s for modern furniture with industrial design products.

Today, the company is run by the two sisters Monica and Valentina Mariani. “It was grandfather Giuseppe Mariani with his brother Misac – they say – who started the company. They designed and produced bespoke handmade furniture using a carpenter in the company and a local blacksmith who made wrought iron beds. In the beginning, prams were also marketed. The turning point of the business came from those who with far-sightedness ferried it into the present. Our father Mario Mariani was its soul and pioneer until his sudden death in 2011 when he was only 71 years old. It all started for him when he helped his father Giuseppe and his cousin Sergio in the family business or F.lli Mariani M&G, whose historic headquarters were in Piazza del Carmine and were already known in the classical and artisanal furniture sector. Meanwhile, Mario Mariani studied architecture in Florence. In 1967, when grandfather Giuseppe died – Monica and Valentina say – father Mario had to give up his studies to devote himself full time to the family business, which he quickly left his innovative imprint ».

These were the years of fermentation of Made in Italy design, and Mario Mariani was very often in Milan accompanied by his friend and designer collaborator Piero Menichetti, with whom he gave birth to important collaborations. «Father – continue the Mariani sisters – get in touch with personalities of caliber Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, Enzo Mari, Vico Magistretti, Michelino Provinciali, Bruno Munari, Antonia Astori and many other leading figures in the Milanese design milieu. Thus began the distribution of historical brands of design products from many companies such as Arflex, Artemide, Boffi, Cassina, De Padova, Knoll, Flos, Zanotta, which we proudly have invoice No. 1. Dad then designed the interior spaces with his own skill and originality, and he sometimes designed tables and containers to be included in his projects along with design products. Our mother Anna also worked in the company, which in the mid 80’s with her cousin Sergio’s exit changed her appearance by moving to Piazza dell’Arancio and name and became F.lli Mariani di Mario Mariani & C. Who took of the accounts. She and father met very young people right at work. It was in 2005, after Mrs Anna’s untimely death, that the dei dei Bacchettoni, formerly the company’s warehouse, was chosen as the new location. We sisters – Mariani explains – were born and raised in this environment full of stimuli and creativity with the philosophy “The best is at least” or “Simplicity is the winning thing”. In the light of this creative drive, we are committed to continuing the business by giving it an imprint and a personal touch, and in 2019 we transformed the company to make it reborn, and renamed it Spaziomariani. Today, Spaziomariani is not only a place where design products are marketed, but also a kind of design studio where you can find tailor-made interior solutions and where you can choose and touch materials and finishes for the realization of these projects. of the historical period of great uncertainty, we are obliged to bring Spaziomariani into the future ».
