The inauguration of the ninth edition of the “La Notte dei Lettere” festival yesterday afternoon, which took place in Udine, in Piazza Libertà, with a live connection to the symbolic piazza della Transalpina (trg Evrope), shared by Gorizia and Nova Gorica. The show – curated by Romeo Pignat and interpreted by Giorgio Monte (narrator) and accordionist Gianni Fassetta – had already made its full debut in Gorizia in the reception hall of the Palazzo Lantieri last May 6 during the conference of the Institute of Central European Culture. meetings dedicated to the Gorizia border.
There is also space for a review of images and texts dedicated to the history of the Friulian-Julian migrations of the last century. The part selected for the inauguration was the one that most moved the Gorizia audience, dedicated to the reconciliation process started in 1965 by the mayors of Nova Gorica and Gorizia Jožko Štrukelj and Michele Martina. The reference to the European Capital of Culture 2025 was immediately apparent, and that is in fact the reason why Regional Councilor for Culture Tiziana Gibelli greets the Udine event right from the sunny cross-border square.
Along with her the municipal counterpart Fabrizio Oreti, now former director of GO! 2025 Kaja Širok, the journalist Vincenzo Compagnone and the president of èStoria, Adriano Ossola. While from the Loggia del Lionello it was the mayor of Udine Pietro Fontanini who recalled the “square” as a place “for contact with other peoples and cultures: a constant that is part of the Friulian DNA”. The reference to the Independence Square in Kiev, which became famous in 2014 for the Euromaidan demonstration, is therefore also inevitable, recalling the words of Ukrainian President Zelensky, according to which “all seats must be called ‘Freedom'”.
“In Udine, there is a very high percentage of people who read,” Fontanini boasted, illustrating how his city will become the main character in the two days of the festival, welcoming many writers to the presentation of their works. Introducing Širok, Gibelli took the opportunity to explain the reasons for her recent resignation as leader of zavod, having been called to Ljubljana by the new Prime Minister Robert Golob to hold the post of State Secretary for Culture in his governmentas was the case for another member of the board of the same body, Vesna Humar, who is to work with Slovenian Foreign Minister Matej Arčon.
She will also become Foreign Minister. After reminiscent of Boris Pahor, Širok is linked to the experience of Martina and Štrukelj, recalling the fact that the Capital of Culture will just be dedicated to “family memories, with the aim of definitively repairing the fractures suffered in the twentieth century”. The heart of the inauguration was represented by the concert performed in conjunction with the Loggia del Lionello by the students of the Jacopo Tomadini Conservatory in Udine, followed by the interpretations of the pieces by the Slovenian writers Benjamin by the students of the Trieste music. school Glasbena Matica, Ipavec and Blaž Arnič.
From Udine, the compliments to the organization of the festival also came from the President of the Central European Association – as well as Gect – Paolo Petiziol, who suffers from what is happening in Europe today, but who thanks to the music and harmony offered by very young students, are able to “rejoice in what they hear”. Petiziol was followed by an intervention by Ossola, which did not fail to claim “the merit of having created in Gorizia in 2005 one of the most important festivals at the national level in the field of history writing”. Compagnone therefore wanted to express the sincere appeal that for 2025 square symbol of “two Gorizie” can define a single name on both sides.
A space that has great potential that is still untapped, beginning with the prestigious building of the railway station: “There are many rooms, still unused, that could host truly innovative initiatives, such as a bilingual kindergarten with Italian and Slovenian language teachers, or – added the journalist – the periodic meeting place between the municipal councils of Gorizia and Nova Gorica after the very brave experience of Martina and Štrukelj “.
