Alberto Lorusso: “Our heritage is culture, let’s strengthen this lever”

Alberto Lorusso

Alberto Lorusso, candidate with the to-do list! Tosi Mayor, tells about the carefree, self-ironic and lively Verona, which he saw for the first time at the age of twenty, and which he would like to see again today.

You approached active politics in 2017, but you have been interested much earlier, right?

I believe it is the duty of every citizen to have their say and seek solutions to problems. At university, I was a student representative, and I took care of some of the function as a trade unionist.

In 2017, he supported Patrizia Bisinella, who, however, lost the election. Now try again with Flavio Tosi. What do you like about your policy?

I believe we share concreteness and openness. He is a practical and sincere person and loyal to me.

In the meantime, you have set up an association, Verona Riparte. How did the idea come about?

Verona Riparte was born from a confrontation between friends during the pandemic. It arises with the desire to devise practical ideas to solve some local problems. We share a passion for our city: I have lived in Verona since I was twenty, my roots are not here, but I decide every day to live and work for this city.

When you arrived in Verona many years ago, were the Veronese different than today?

The pandemic has overwhelmed us all with a blanket of grief. However, I think it is an obstacle that we will overcome. I remember a sign in San Zeno that said “customers in a hurry are asked to arrive ten minutes ahead of time”. I was a child and these words had made me laugh, it seemed to me to be the concrete rendition of the saying “Veronesi completely crazy”. These signs are gone, the good-natured irony has disappeared a little, and so is the self-irony. I wish the ease that would one day come back, that’s it.

If you could get into the city council, you would like to be part of the culture, right?

Yes, I am convinced that everyone should use their skills where they know what they are doing. I am convinced that Verona needs a cultural renaissance. Our museums are beautiful, but always empty. We have a legacy that must be exploited and valued. One of my proposals is to employ young people in museums for internships in the summer, and I think it is appropriate that these initiatives also take place in order to favor the young people’s future professional choices. In Italy, there is a need for young people who study art, restoration, history: it is the oil of the nation and in which we must invest.

On his social channels, he also talked about tourism, which in his opinion must be changed in relation to today’s …

On social networks, I had for empirical knowledge predicted the results of a study of the typology of the tourist from Veronese, basically of the hit-and-run type. Verona deserves more than this, it must also be appreciated, loved and experienced by tourists. The tourist should stay at least three or four days, even better if a week. We need to make sure that visitors come to the city and breathe it in and enjoy it to the fullest. I wonder: a state like Germany, what would it do if it had our entire artistic heritage?

Our second artistic legacy is William Shakespeare and his love for Verona, another aspect that may not be much appreciated today …

In general, everything can be improved. At this moment, Verona is moving forward almost out of inertia, we need to improve all our heritage. It amazes me that the Shakespeare Festival is not getting the recognition it deserves. Everyone knows Verona as Shakespeare’s city. Why do not we contact one of the royal family in Verona to inaugurate this festival? Would give one boost fantastic for the city. You need to know how to dream and imagine, and throw your heart over the obstacle.
