A white canvas studded with splashes of color, in shades ranging from warm pink to acid green, a dose of 70s glam discoand floral prints here and there: this is the design recipe for Fawn Galli interior. “I’m inspired by nature, I create spaces that are outside the box “, says the designer who today takes us to the discovery of this apartment in New York, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, inside a building finished in 1929 and designed by the architect Lafayette A. Goldstone.
The daughter of a New York diplomat lives in this house, with a long career in fashion as head of merchandising for David Yurman and Louis Vuitton. With her, her husband Harry, a CFO, and their two children. “We have rethought the interior through a complete renovation that celebrating the typical details of pre-war apartments with a twist cool and fun for a lively young couple and their two children, ”continues Fawn Galli.
The customer demanded one minimal space with a selected selection of furniture embraces different styles, bold colors and above all unexpected shapes. “We wanted to create a Manhattan apartment with one Parisian sensitivity», Reveals the designer, who despite the renovation has added detailed moldings and chevron floors, to give the apartment an aesthetic of European sophistication.
“We then added modern artwork and furniture to emphasize the contrast between traditional details and modern furniture. Some of my favorite furniture can be found in the living room, such as the Cipria armchair from Campana brothers, flanked by Mark Cooper’s Yu Yu JP-3, a mixed media painting from 2016 », reveals Fawn Galli, who goes on to tell us about his favorite room. “I love the dining room. In this space we have taken the traditional motifs and transported them to the present. I like to awaken the senses by mixing unexpected elements, such as the golden feather lamp over the USM office furniture. Tom Dixon’s chairs paired with a colorful wallpaper from Timorous Beasties create a striking juxtaposition. The vintage brass chandelier is perfectly balanced by the elegant LoveHouse table, which is located just below. It’s a fun space that encourages lively conversation! “
This work, of course, has not been unharmed by disruption due to the pandemic. “There have been several times where we have had to continue where we started, but that teamwork and patience they brought us to the goal. Supply chain problems caused us more delays than expected, but we were able to turn around and adapt to these challenges by making new choices that ultimately improved the overall design, the designer continues.
In all environments we find moments of magic, unexpected colors and blends, as in the powder room, wrapped in the Designers Guild wallpaper by Christian Lacroix and enriched with yellow taps. “This interior is a perfect balance between architecture, modern furniture and art. Many shades have been muted to provide the right space to the most vibrant colors and highlight the extravagant wallpapers. Customers were also impressed eclecticismas soon as the house was finished, they arranged a glamorous cocktail party to celebrate it ».
“As I explained in my book Magical space (edited by Rizzoli) I’m interested in awakening the interior and it human sensitivity help them create a real space that reflects who they are. Although I work to make any environment personal and original, there are aspects that come back in each project, such as surrealismnature, touch bohemethe contrast and of course the sparkle », concludes Fawn Galli.
