Azerbaijan GP 2022, the secrets behind the Baku circuit with Brembo

BAKU, eighth stage After the unpredictable Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and Ferrari seek redemption in Azerbaijan. Among the streets of the Baku Street Circuit, however, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez (winner of Monaco) and Red Bull start with underdogs. From Munich to Azerbaijan, from one city track to another, but the characteristics of the two tracks and also the traditions are different. It is the fifth edition of the Azerbaijan GP, ​​but the sixth race in Baku because the European GP was held in 2016. The Azerbaijani railway falls into the category of very demanding circuits for the brakes: On a scale of 1 to 5, it achieved a difficulty index of 4, identical to the Montreal track, where it runs in a week. The layout comprises 4 initial 90-degree curves, where the brakes are subjected to large loads and subsequently with variable design, where the necessary braking action is changed continuously.

In addition to the aluminum alloys and carbon discs, Brembo also supplies the teams with cushions, also in carbon: each team consumes a total of up to 600 per. season. There are at least 2 variants of material and as many for geometry for a total of 4 possible combinations, both for front and rear brakes. Each team then adopts a pad with a dedicated design that fits perfectly with the geometry of the Brembo caliper used. The length of each pillow is between 160 and 190 mm and the area is between 50 and 90 cm2, while the weight varies from 150 to 300 grams. The coefficient of friction is about 0.5 and the operating temperature is the same as the discs, both have very high conductivity, are in direct contact and made of similar materials.



Thanks to the experience of 47 years with Formula 1 and the collaboration with car manufacturers, Brembo produces a range of cushions for road cars that ensure maximum brake safety. Thanks to a length of 6 km and 10 brake sections, the brakes are in operation for 20 and a half seconds per second. round: they work a lot, but it’s only 20 percent of the entire race, compared to 21 percent at the Monaco GP and 22 percent of the Singapore GP. From start to the checkered flag, each driver exerts a total brake pedal load of 60 tons. In fact, the load in 8 of the 10 brake sections exceeds one hundred weight, and in 3 points it is over 130 kg. There are also three curves where the braking distance is three digits, but none of these are between curve 4 and curve 14, thanks to speeds of less than 300 km / h reached in this part of the Azerbaijani track.



Of the 10 brake sections on the Baku City Circuit, 4 are considered to be very demanding on the brakes, 5 are of medium severity and only one is light. The most difficult thing for the braking system is that at the first turn: the single seats arrive there at 344 km / h. and in 2 and a half seconds they go down to 109 km / h. To do this, the pilots exert a load of 136 kg on the brake pedal and suffer from a deceleration of 4.4 g, meanwhile they travel 137 meters.
