R. & P.
With the end of the school year set for Thursday, June 9th the long vacations arrive to the 76,000 and more students from schools at all levels in the province of Reggio Calabria. The last bell is therefore ringing, but not for the nine thousand and five hundred small students in the kindergarten, who will finish their educational activities next Thursday, June 30th.
Then it will be a holiday for most until September 19, 2022, probably the beginning of the new school year (the Calabria region has not yet issued the decree), three full months away from homework, questions and books. However, this will not be the case for everyone. For eighth-grade students, the end of lessons is actually synonymous with state exams. For the fourteen-year-olds, the real holidays start on June 30, the last day set by the IP Ministry of State Examinations. The 18-year-olds, on the other hand, have to struggle with exams at least until mid-July.
In the meantime, it’s already time for voting, and the next few days will be dedicated to final assessments at the schools: ballot papers for admission to the next class and state exams.
The four thousand and two hundred and fifty third graders in primary school begin first, who must face their last effort, the attainment of the so-called ‘minority’. This is followed by the nearly five thousand five hundred graduates from the high schools, who begin their state exams on Wednesday 22 June.
The exam, which has the character of verification and certification of the pedagogical and didactic goals at the end of primary school, represents the first test that students face on their educational path. In primary school, the evaluation component is in fact entrusted to an assessment of the pupil’s overall level of maturity, and only in special and justified cases is non-admission envisaged in the next class (Article 3 of Act 169). / 2008).
Evaluation has always represented a moment of particular relevance, not only because it completes a school cycle, but because it simultaneously starts a new path of cultural and personal training for each student.
Admission to the eighth grade exams is the responsibility of the class council with an aptitude assessment (expressed in tenths) for students who, by a decision of a majority in the class council, have obtained a grade of at least six tenths in each discipline, voting on behavior included.
The requirements for admission to the 8th grade final exam are as follows: have participated in at least three quarters of the annual number of hours adapted to the general school regulations. Situations related to particular epidemiological conditions are an exception.
And so not to have incurred particularly heavy disciplinary sanctions.
The vote takes into account the completed academic background, while the Invalsi tests that the student has completed during the year do not help to define the assessment.
Any non-admission is decided by a majority.
Examinations begin after the vote and the dates vary from institution to institution. However, it is likely that the initial meeting for the establishment of the commissions will take place immediately after the end of the lessons between 11 and 13 June.
Two written tests are planned for the first cycle test, one in Italian and one relating to logical-mathematical skills; an interview follows, under which the competencies regarding the English language, the second language of society and the teaching of social education will also be assessed.
For musical courses, an instrument rehearsal test is also provided at the interview.
The final grade remains in tenths. You get praise. Exam takes place in person in the period between the end of the lessons and June 30, 2022.
Only for the interview, the possibility of video conferencing is provided for candidates who can not leave their homes, a condition that will be documented in any case.
The middle school gap
The two main areas to be worked on in the near future are learning Italian and mathematics; it is a territorial divide that starts from primary school and is accentuated in middle school, the soft underbelly or if we want the weak link in our education system.
The middle school, an intermediate thing, has for many years been in search of its own identity, attracted to the high school (the top floor of the “secondary school”), but then recalled to the common affiliation with the primary school (the so-called “first cycle” of instruction ). The alternation of different faiths (school – from time to time – intermediate, secondary I class, first cycle, basic) gives the imprint of this real Pirandellian syndrome, in the unresolved ambiguity of its secondary nature – of access to formal knowledge and thinking using models – or completing primary education, therefore to consolidate instrumental literacy.
This deep crisis in middle school, which for many years has lost its identity and the sense of its mission, must be tackled quickly and with energy. It is necessary to give it a clear mission by updating its pedagogical and didactic offer, through a strong orientation that the teaching must be adapted, to be implemented through an extension of school time with a real “afternoon school”.
