I walk into the classroom and a student meets me, someone who manages, intelligently, with floral Bermuda shorts and flip flops. He sees that I stop to observe him, his legs are muscular, feet free, he is waiting for me to tell him something. In fact, something I say to him: I have always been careful and loyal to you. On the other hand, today I think I’m asking you for a favor: When you know I’m here, can you come to school dressed more appropriately? I can not commit you, a personal service I ask of you. The boy does not answer, however in the following days I find him in class with jeans and sneakers, just like everyone else. Luckily, I stop him in the hall to thank him. A few days go by and the fathera man more than fifty than forty, shows up for the weekly reception scheduled for an interview with his parents … in Bermuda shorts and flip flops!

I would be done here. The story is worth a fableor allegorical fable to say (almost) everything there is to say on the subject. Unfortunately, it does not end here, for the pandemic following this episode and the catastrophic experience of distance learning has accelerated a process that is already underway. The students have suffered, it’s true, they have suffered a lot. Not only imprisonment, but the fact that what it would have been better to call medical distancing has become a real social distancing, which – rightly – is used to define it. To compensate for so much suffering, students were led to believe that it was not necessary to go to school, nor was it necessary to study regularly because being promoted is a right of a disorder., regardless of the degree of preparation. This is what emerges from the pandemic today, exacerbated by the spectacularization of the suffering that is destroying ordinary media life. P.todemia and electronic social communication have put students and parents on track, with the responsibility of teachers, in producing chats and interest groups that multiply, according to the national model, requests, complaints, gossip at any time of the day or night. In addition, pand you have a specific electronic register that I do not mention, lfirst thing that comes to full screen when you open it a number: the number average of your daughter’s or son’s grades. Not meritocracy, but encouragement of competition before any value other than its opposite. Electronic acceleration and furry pietism are combined to become one of the leading cars in a train that we know well: all rights for all according to their desires and no duty to anyone. And here there is really little to add.

The feeling of education

Difficult to educateperhaps even impossible to do without errors on both sides: One must hope that everyone can make mistakes and later learn from their mistakes. For this we need rules: schedules to be adhered to, procedures for control, role distribution, appropriate behavior (even the dress speaks). And they must all respect them. Tiring but necessary. Not a right to be questioned when you want to miss school at will, as do not free yourself to dress up for beach volleyball (and polite people wear something when they get away from the beach, even in Jesolo or Bibione). Educating is tiring, it requires a lot of availability, a lot of time, and then recognizing your own and others’ boundaries, knowing that you can do as you can, as best you can, because you can not always do what you want. Is it trivial? Maybe. At home, first and foremost, then in school, to students, teachers, parents, I would ask: will we start over with the intention of making this difficult thing less unsuccessful?
