Valdibella Food School begins to teach children the value of food

Sicily – “Childhood is not just a time of preparation for life, which we are often led to think about for our children, but it is already life itself”. This is a sentence by Peter Rosegger and Valdibella Madskolen was born for children who have decided to take care of the training of the little ones. After feeling the excellent feedback that Valdibella Practical School of Agro-Ecology actually had, the Valdibella cooperative decided to extend the educational offer to include children and their families in order to promote proximity to good agricultural practice; which will hopefully turn into good food habits.

Planting a kitchen garden or sowing wheat, observing the work of bees, following the oil supply chain, will be some of the agreements that the Food School will arrange during the year. They will be meetings based on observation, practice and knowledge, but which will also focus a lot on the playful aspects to involve children, as nutrition education in childhood is often only referred to following a healthy and balanced diet.

THE FOOD SCHOOL

“That’s not what the Food School wants to focus on,” says Valeria Monti, creator of the project and coordinator of the school. ‘The purpose would rather be that propose focuses on some key foods in our culture and expands their versatile knowledge: historical, anecdotal, productive and overtly gastronomic. From this will also derive the awareness of seasonality and thus the expectation of the end of the biological cycle, but also of the work processes behind it, and hopefully ultimately awareness of a more responsible consumption ».

But the school’s goal is also to involve the final consumer more in the production processes. In fact, the agricultural world often does not enter into dialogue with those who then buy the products: “A groove separates the parties, as if supply and demand are opposites and have opposing interests,” begins Massimiliano Solano, chairman of the Valdibella cooperative. “Repairing this tear is the only way to a more sustainable future.”
