Sissi, Sacred Indices – LabOratorio degli Angeli, Bologna

Re-inventing the anatomy in a dreamlike and surreal light is what the artist suggests Sissi (Bologna, 1977) by LabOratorio degli Angeli from Bologna. “Sacred Indices” is the project, which runs until May 15, 2022, and which brings together the works presented on the occasion of Art City, curated by Leonardo Regano and in collaboration with Galleria d’Arte Maggiore gam
The set-up, cared for in detail, gives the architectural structure again the ancient solemnity due to the cult that was once dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, who defines the central nave through the row of eight tables entitled Index. A new and revisited anatomical atlas is represented on light sheets of paper, in which anthropoform forms carefully depicted come to life, suspended between anatomical rigor and imagination.

The scientific study of organs is eloquent from the observation of the works, but Daniela Olivieri, alias Sissi, enriches it by conducting research in the body, starting from the encyclopedic text comparison up to the study of the interior through the use of the most diverse means of expression, such as for example, performance, painting, drawing, photography experienced over the years in connection with his work.
After Index located along the main nave, the viewer’s gaze is brought into perspective to the central work in the exhibition Testa Intestina. It dominates the scene, as a main image in the apse of a church. The site-specific work confirms the strong interest in everything that characterizes man, in balance between rationality and interiority. The brain, located in the upper part of the work, which has always been a symbol of logic and reasoning, is connected to the intestine, an ’emotional brain’ through meandering tissues, which outlines the space of representation, with reference to the anatomical structure. of the digestive system. At the foot of Main intestineplaced on a table, to remember the holiness of an altar is placed Parallel anatomytext written by Sissi that confirms the research and work that has been done and begun since the time of the academy, proposing a new model, a revised anatomy, where science and dreams come together to create new scenarios and a parallel universe.

As argued by curator Leonardo Regano in the text accompanying the exhibition: “A general sense of wonder envelops Sissi’s work, a perception of suspension of being, left in the balance between magic and reality. […] This conception of wonder stems from Sissi’s ability to make alive and concrete an imaginary living by visionary intuitions translated into an autonomous and functional language for the creation of a world-other.

To complete the exhibition, additional works have been placed behind Indexas to create twice, from which new creations and surrealistic representations stand out, where bones create knots and flora language that define the leaves of a plant.
The imaginary, in which the viewer is led, leads to a consideration of the present relationship between art and science. In Sissi’s work, the study of the body becomes the means of analyzing and rethinking this link, bringing an alternative way of looking at the body and at the body, “re-establishing modern scientific knowledge” as stated by Leonardo Regano. The artist’s intuition allows the reworking of the scientific model in a parallel, equally rigorous, where the changes made stem from a deep reflection on the inner and emotional and how they affect the body itself.
