Mamelis hymn in schools? In the meantime, however, the musical culture does not exist

I listened with interest to Minister Bianchi’s recent public release on school music issues, where on the same date and at the same time he proposed to have all classes from all Italian schools sing in choruses. Mamelis hymn: what a fine initiative, I thought, but the substance? The substance has been different in the Italian primary school for some time latita: based on the questions in the competition for teaching music in primary school. It is quoted verbatim: “Design a didactic formative unit that makes students in a class first try to read in septiclavio according to the old adiastematic notation”.

At first, when I thought it was a joke, a kind of fake, I thought the gloss “How was Antani” missing: impossible, I thought like any other insider, such a supercazzola in the competition. But to my confusion and deep regret, I discovered that I was investigating a bit that it was of pure reality. Apart from the obvious mismatch between the context of a class before primary school and the study of septiclavius (including, in addition to the volino and bass keys, also those of soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone), except nonsense of such a formative proposition in the context of a middle school, that which makes species is that which follows shortly after taking the form of the words “according to the old adiastematic notation.”

Does the Ministry of Education know that the adiastematic notation is the former, and not a little, use of the musical staff? He therefore knows that type of notation it has nothing to do with any key and least of all with all seven keys included in the so-called septiclavio? So what do we want to do? Would it not be the case that someone from the Ministry of Education, who shows a minimum of respect for future teaching professionals, for our candidates, for candidates for a competition for the professorship, tries on behalf of the whole ministry to give the deepest apology for such errors?

In fact, it is not as if this alone was not enough, the only question without any historical-scientific basis: in recent months there have been a wealth of reports from candidates from the most diverse competition classes of just as many errors among the questions or, mutatis mutandisof the imprecise correspondence between the questions asked and the relative answers which the Ministry itself has indicated as correct.

But let’s move on: Minister Bianchi knows that Italy is the country where music does not create culture, where music culture at school level does not exist? It is the visual art, the literature, certainly not the musical, that usually does not go through the intonation of Mameli’s hymn, but the study of its history, its forms, its styles in a country, ours, which played a fundamental role in the formation of The musical language used today in all corners of the world. We have said, written, repeated it dozens and dozens of times without ever having received the slightest consideration: these are therefore suggestions that could also be good they are not at all if even today the hypothesis of an act of a real school music culture is not even remotely broadcast.

In the land of the Opera the boys They do not know if are Giuseppe Verdi, Gioachino Rossini, Giacomo Puccini, and apart from the opera, it is inconceivable that an entire European population does not have the slightest knowledge of the invaluable Western music repertoire, its glorious past and its new language. We want once and for all to understand that without music culture, the entire theater circuit will still suffer large budget deficits as already in decades of consolidated practice? Why should young people, the most dynamic band in any society, go to a concert in any theater or auditorium if they are ever sufficiently sensitized to conscious listening to music?

The study of art history performs in its reference sector, exactly this function at the level of the use and presence of the spaces used for the dissemination of visual art: why not start adopting the same economic-cultural model of music? It is done in Germany and in all advanced countries, why not also start doing it in Italy? In addition to a petition initiated by the Italian musicology group, there is a bill already submitted to Parliament since January 2019, the n. 1553, for the involvement of music history in our folk high school institutes: it is just waiting to be resurrected and carried on in the parliamentary process, what are you waiting for?

Finally: Minister Bianchi knows it even today to music historians access to education is prevented of their subjects in musical colleges, while at the same time being able to teach it in the universities? Again: do you know that art history is studied two hours a week at musical colleges, while music history, which is also present at these colleges two hours a week, does not appear in the educations of the artistic colleges? Why this all-Italian inequality between the history of visual art, which is rightly ubiquitous in high school programs, and the one that pertains to the art of sound? Is the Ministry of Education able to provide adequate, reasoned and timely answers?
