from Francesca Messina

The 41st edition of the Certamen Ciceronianum Arpinas is over. In first place was student Matteo Lorenzo Guglielmo Palandri Raggi from Liceo Classico “Parentucelli Arzelà” in Sarzana, La Spezia; in second place Gabriele Ambrosino from Liceo Classico “Carducci” from Nola (Naples), in third place Matteo Guerrini from Liceo Scientifico “Enrico Fermi” from Cecina (Livorno). The event, an international competition for the Latin language, in which students from all over the world attending the final year of classical and scientific colleges can participate, which this year was attended by students from seven European countries, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Romania, Spain, Hungary and South Korea as well as from various Italian regions started on Friday 6 May in Arpino,

The test took place in Tulliano’s premises. The students tried to translate and comment on a passage from a work by Cicero.

It was three days when Arpino was once again the European capital of Latin. The award ceremony was held yesterday morning in Piazza Municipio.

“The comparison with Cicero’s side, in these times still difficult due to the pandemic and full of strangers due to the winds of war on the border with Europe – said the honorary president of the Certamen Commission, Professor Filippo Material – is particularly relevant for great love of Arpinate for peace and harmony. Certamen can certainly contribute to the affirmation of a peaceful and meek society, free from expansionist goals that deny the freedom of others. “

“I signed this morning the ‘manifesto of Certamen ciceronianum’ – stressed the councilor of the Lazio region Mauro Buschini – written by a great Latin scholar such as Prof Filippo Material, this year’s honorary president of the jury and translated into Italian by the students. This appeal for peace and courage the Russian invasion of Ukraine was signed in front of me by all the young people who participated in the Certamen.

The morning before the closing event of the 2022 edition, I attended the conference on “Communicating the old: new ways to read, study and communicate old authors”, I visited the study center and the exhibition “the fantasy in painting by Abramo Tancredi”

Thanks to the work of the municipal administration, delegate for culture Niccolò Casinelli and Deputy Mayor Massimo Sera, who welcomed me and accompanied me this morning, for having endured even in these years of pandemic.
