Pietralata is born as the new stadium in Rome, but the municipality does not want to let the historic facilities go in the direction of a slow decline: Flaminio, PalaTiziano and Olimpico (when it no longer wants the matches in Rome and Lazio). In addition, it aims to relaunch the entire Flaminio quadrant to create the largest widespread city for sports and culture in Europe, and take advantage of the opportunities guaranteed by major cultural centers such as Maxxi: an area of almost 100 thousand square meters with Campidoglio , which in this match is preparing to enter into an alliance with the main players in Italian sports (Credito Sport e Sport e Salute) and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. With this in mind, a future for Flaminio is outlined between major rugby matches, while its swimming pools and fitness centers will be open to the many Roman sports associations that do not find space.
PalaTiziano will once again be home to the Roman basketball and volleyball teams, who are now forced to play far from the city. In addition, we want to create paths and moments of integration, on the one hand towards the tennis and paddle courts and the courts in Foro Italico, and on the other hand with the exhibitions and the permanent ones of Maxxi and the future city. of Science by via Guido Reni or Auditorium shows.
The municipality wants to integrate the already existing projects (the future Science City in Guido Reni or the regeneration of the post office on the Tiber) with others, presented by private, more targeted on the sporting front. With this in mind, the Institute for Sports Credit and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, with the support of Sport and Health, will, before the end of the month, present a plan to Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and City Councilor Maurizio Veloccia. which, supported by an initial investment of 80 million euros, aims, on the one hand, to rebuild Flaminio and PalaTiziano and, on the other hand, to create synergies with the other major cultural institutions in this area. Above all, Maxxi and Musica per Roma and the Santa Cecilia Foundation, which headed the Auditorium.
The council, Gualtieri, hoped until the very end to keep the teams from Rome and Lazio attached to the city’s historic stadiums. But the two companies have different projects. Therefore, it is necessary to keep the Flaminio disc in its original calling.
In this direction, Credito Sportivo and the Cdp project arrive as mentioned. And the facility for restoration of the facility designed by Pier Luigi Nervi is based on the conservation plan created by the Getty Foundation and La Sapienza to respect the restrictions imposed by Superintendentency and the designer’s family.
In this connection, the architect’s son, Marco Nervi, will be part of the technical commission. And for Flaminio, the dream is one day to make it the stadium for a Roman rugby franchise that will take part in the former Celtic League now United Rugby Championship, a competition that includes Italian selections (currently Benetton Treviso and Zebre Parma), Welsh , Scottish, Irish and since 2017 South African.
And then again a pitch for the women’s national teams in football. While school students and members of sports associations will be able to train in the swimming pools and in the stadium gym. PalaTiziano, which has already undergone a restyling work, will once again be the place to play home games for the Roman basketball and volleyball teams.
But this is only the first goal: the second, more ambitious, is to create a huge connection with the Olimpico and Foro Italico area, assets in sports and health, where there are still swimming pools, an athletics track and tennis and paddle courts. The two main players will be, as mentioned, Credito Sportivo, the public body that financed 75% of the Italian structures, and Cdp, which will form a specific company, which in the future will be open to other topics to increase investment capacity. In terms of sports and health management – which will act as a local partner also given the facilities in the area such as the Olimpico – it will play a fundamental role.
But in that sense, contact has already been made with international companies that manage large sports theme parks. In another step, technological and commercial partners are also involved: the goal is to make it the City of Sports and Culture of the future an intelligent and permanently connected area. On the financing front, the bulk of the 80 million should be pledged directly by the major shareholders, while the remaining capital will be recovered through lines of credit and public funds.
From this point of view, Act 147 of 2013, the initiators explain, will be “one of the most important administrative corridors”. Credito Sportivo and Cdp are also studying alliances with other institutions in the area: For example, the first contacts with the Auditorium have already begun to solve the biggest problem: the construction of car parks. While they are ready to do their part with the Municipality for the urban planning work.
With this project, the Capitol was able to complete the rebuilding of the Flaminio quadrant, where the first urban renewal operations have already begun. Listed here are the future City of Science for Guido Reni (the international competition will be announced after the summer), the big Maxxi, the restoration of Borghetto Flaminio by Sapienza to the Faculty of Architecture, the rebuilding of the post office club (which will also see the birth of a public park) on the Tiber and the area of the Ponte della Musica, the arrival of the tram again to Guido Reni, not forgetting the interventions which, at the input of the municipality, Sport e Salute are performing at the Foro Italico and to the Olympic village.
