Friuli lost at Friulian Culture Week

Cineteca del Friuli, Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche and Mario Quargnolo Mediateca participate in Friulian Culture Week (5-15 May 2022) with the presentation on Thursday 5 May at 19 on Visionario di Udine of the DVD Friuli lost in film by Guido Galanti, 1934-1958, released by Cineteca. The screening will be introduced by historian Carlo Gaberscek, author of the booklet that accompanies the DVD, of which viewers will receive a free copy. There will be cousins ​​and heirs to Guido Galanti, Elena and Alessandro Piselli, who have entrusted the original films to Cineteca. Free admission with mandatory seat reservation at or at the cinema box office.

Born as Tina Modotti in Borgo Pracchiuso, Guido Galanti (1901-1989) from Udine was a pioneer in film in Friuli, author of countless amateur works made between 1934 and the late 1950s, first in connection with the Cine Club Udine, of which he was one of the founders in 1930, then for Cineguf, then – from 1945 – for his own production house “La Galanti Film”. His works are today an important proof of an era and a territory, especially Udines.

Gifted with remarkable agility and creative spirit, interested in the show from a very young age, Galanti made in the first decade of activity above all short and medium-length feature films, brilliant comedies, where he often also appeared as an interpreter. This is the case with Contro Vento, from 1938, winner of the first prize in the special category (16 mm) at the Venice Film Festival, where we witness the adventures of a small team improvising the shooting of a film. There are some flight scenes recorded at Campoformido Airport. Another feature film that will be presented at Visionario is My friend the farmer, made in color in 1958 for the Federation of Savings Banks of the Venice and accompanied by the motif of Evi, Ezio Vittorio, one of the main characters in the music scene in Udine in 50s. Constructed as a long flashback, it is the story of a small Friulian farmer who, thanks to the bank’s help, manages to recover from a state of misery.

But from 1945, Galanti devoted himself almost exclusively to documentaries, making about thirty works. Half of these relate to Udine and constitute the most consistent core of film material in the city in the 1940s and 1950s. The best known images are the images of Udine’s liberation, to date the only cinematic testimony of the event, taken on May 1, 1945, partly from her home in Viale Venezia, and Quattro passi per Udine, from 1953, a lively portrait of the city.

With his camera, Galanti recorded the most varied events, from the most important to social events, sporting competitions, inaugurations (including the Moretti Brewery on Piazzale XXVI July 31st May 31st 70 years ago) and other local curiosities. In addition to the images of Liberation and Quattro passi per Udine, Visionario will see Udine journalists’ Latisana-Lignano cycling race (1947), the Giro d’Italia stage at Porta Gemona (1948), where Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali also appear, Grado 8. August 1948 – Election of Miss Venezia Giulia, Missionary Madonna travels to Tricesimo (1949), The Honorable De Gasperi in Udine (1950) and Arrival of veterans from Russia to Udine station (1954).

Among the other titles on the DVD, Galanti’s most famous comedy, Giornate di sole, from 1934, recorded with Renato Spinotti (Dante Spinotti’s uncle and the one who initiated him into photography) between Udine and Lignano, at the beginning of its development as a seaside resort.

The accompanying music for the silent films was entrusted by Cineteca to pianist Mauro Colombis, from Pordenone, who moved to Australia.

Guido Galanti concludes the trilogy of “Lost Friuli” in Cineteca del Friuli, which includes the two previous DVDs dedicated to the works of Antonio Seguini de Santi and Giorgio Trentin, also preserved by Cineteca in the original format in film and digitized with the support of Friuli Foundation, Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and Ministry of Culture-Directorate-General for Film and Audiovisual.
