New pharmaceutical packaging for Bormioli Pharma – 3 design competitions

competition 1: deadline 20 July | competition 2 and 3: deadline 21 July 2022

The pharmaceutical company Bormioli Pharma launches, in search of new packaging, together with Desall 3 competitions aimed at the design of innovative systems capable of renewing supply on the market.

With over 100 years of experience, Bormioli is one of the leading international suppliers of healthcare solutions and a manufacturer of primary glass and plastic packaging for pharmaceutical use.

The three challenges relate to the administration of liquid medicine:

  • the first asks participants to imagine an innovative container for infusion therapies
  • the second and third research two systems for dosing and dispensing ophthalmic drugs (eye care)

Who can participate

Participation in the competitions is free and open to creative talents of any nationality, aged 18 or over.

Let’s see the specific competitions:

1. Bormioli Pharma Re-shape Infusional

delivery no later than July 20, 2022

For this competition the creation of a new container for intravenous infusion therapy. Unlike rigid glass containers, the bag containing the liquid medicine must be collapsible / clampable to take up less space when empty or when the liquid diminishes.

The container must also be free-standing, ie. could support itself independently if placed on a surface. In any case, the object must be able to be used in the traditional way, ie to be able to be hung on standard supports.

The infusion therapy container will be used by medical professionals in hospitals, field hospitals and in emergencies.

The product must be dimensioned to a capacity from 100 ml to 1000 ml and the aesthetics must be minimal and modern and the product as a whole must communicate and guarantee reliability, robustness, trust, safety and user-friendliness.

The permitted materials are plastic, suitable for pharmaceutical use.

Premium

The winner will receive a prize of 5,000 euros.
there is also one suffrage which will award the selected project a prize of 2,500 euros valid for the purchase of the license for economic exploitation of projects not recognized as winning proposals.

2. Ophthalmic delivery design

delivery no later than July 21, 2022

In this competition, an idea is required a new multi-dose – non-disposable – dispensing systemconsisting of: a dispenser that provides a completely different administration system than the current “drop” model • a container bottle in which the liquid drug is contained during its lifetime • the medical equipment that houses the dispenser connected to the bottle.

The product must be simple to use and solve the main problems of the current delivery system, eg by changing the position of hands and head during ingestion, the system with which the user keeps the eye open, the way of centering with respect to the eye is achieved, complete change of “drop” the administration model, etc ..

The product must be dimensioned with reference to bottles with a capacity between 5 and 20 ml and the minimal and modern aesthetics must communicate and guarantee reliability, robustness, trust, safety and user-friendliness.

The permitted materials are PET, PE, glass, rubbers / silicones suitable for pharmaceutical use.

3. Ophthalmic dosage design

delivery no later than July 21, 2022

The third competition, very similar to the second (it is therefore recommended to participate in both), requires design of a dosing system for the administration of ophthalmic products or eye therapies in which the drug is taken in liquid form;.

In fact, Bormioli intends to develop innovative dosing systems that make it possible to dose specific units of measurement, increasing the flexibility of the product.

Currently, the dosing unit for ophthalmic systems is the drop, an element that can be standardized in the design phase of the dosing element, but which does not allow adjustment or definition in the dispensing phase.

The new dose development system can be a mechanical system or a connected electromechanically mixed system, with the ability to transmit data, dosage parameters and other information through an IoT device.

It is therefore possible to imagine an app that is able to represent the main information such as the correctness of the dosage, the patient’s compliance, etc.

The dosing system must be connected or integrated with the packaging element containing the medicine (bottle) and will be used in a personal and independent way by patients and non-professional users (even with disabilities), in connection with daily routines, home / work / travel.

The product must be dimensioned with reference to bottles with a capacity between 5 and 20 ml, and the aesthetics of the product must be minimal and modern. The product must communicate and guarantee reliability, robustness, trust, security and ease of use.

The permitted materials are PET, PE, glass, rubbers / silicones suitable for pharmaceutical use.
