A great desire to return, if not to normal, at least to a more peaceful life after two years of pandemic and restrictions and social isolation. The desire to be together, possibly in joy, an important component for all and crucial for children and young people, the most severely punished (along with the elderly) by the anti-covid-19 measures. “#Mandigos – Sardinia on the table“Has many goals, including the discovery of quality food. It’s about a food education campaign that will guide the Sardinian school groups among the farms and agricultural activities present on the island, and encourage students to try their hand at the field and learn about good food. The project is funded byRegional Department of Agriculture and Agro-Pastoral Reform and is made ofLaore Agency in cooperation withRegional school officeie Regional consortia for the protection of protected designations of origin (BOB) and Protected geographical indications (Igp) and industry associations.
#Mandigos, now in its third phase, after involving parents, teachers and middle school children (with theoretical training seminars and sensory and taste workshops), is now targeting primary school children who will be able to immerse themselves in reality in educational establishments to fully explore how food is grown and processed and understand their connection with Sardinian tradition. Finally, children can regain their space and sociality. And also for education holdings, this occasion marks the return to normality after two years of severe restrictions on the reception of school groups. It will be a feeling to host the children who will finally be able to take part in the days of discovery and experience in the field. For the little ones, it will be the first time, as for two years it was not possible to carry out outdoor educational activities.
The training holdings registered in the regional register of multifunctionality in Sardinia will open their doors to 1,330 participants in the project (registered in 32 institutes spread across the region). School students will be able to get to know the thread that binds the island’s top products from field to table: DOP extra virgin olive oil, Sardinian saffron, Sardinian artichoke, Sardinian pecorino, Roman pecorino and Fiore Sardo; Igp Culurgionis d’Ogliastra and Agnello, together with foods from organic farming.
The school students will see how the seed comes from the plant, how the raw materials are obtained and how these are converted into the finished product: they will participate in the milking of the milk, they will see how the cheese is produced and also how it can be used in the traditional kitchen. They will then literally put their hands in the dough to produce the food. A full immersion in joy that will provide young people with tools to recognize and choose quality food. The day ends with a tasting of the dishes prepared for the occasion. Above all, it will be the starting point for correcting the gap between the places where food is consumed and production, bringing children closer to the landscape and peasant culture, discovering the cycles and rhythms of nature and the seasons, the secret behind the transformation of raw materials.
The experience in educational farms is divided into two moments. In the first, which began in March in the classrooms, the leaders of the educational farms introduced the children to their business, the activities and experiences they will be involved in, the origins and characteristics of the products of the regional agricultural system. From 3 May, however, the students will be directly involved in the farms to experience on their own what they have learned in class. Gather fruit and make ice cream, work cheese and ricotta, see how you get from wheat to flour and from here to bread. They will be able to smell and taste the taste (often very new to them, especially for children living in the city) of the dishes prepared during the day. In other words, they will be engaged in laboratories that are rejected according to the product to be analyzed.
Today, educational farms are able to offer personal travel plans and activities for all age groups, focused on their special circumstances, which manage to span a wide range of topics (both from a theoretical and practical point of view), including the seasons cycle, biodiversity and organic farming methods.
The visits to the farms in the different areas of Sardinia end on 25 May. According to the initiators, this project aims to give children the tools to become happy adults. Childhood is the period of learning, of the first training, therefore this growth phase is ideal for introducing and tasting quality food, produced with wisdom and in accordance with the centuries-old tradition in the land of nuraghien.
The activities began in December 2019. Thanks to the campaign, parents and teachers were also able to deepen the theme of food sustainability, a broad concept that involves – through consumer choice – the economy, the environment, the social substance. the life of the communities. The goal is to train the younger generations to have conscious consumers, but also to help form a food culture and wisdom, to take care of his and the planet’s health, to preserve real food that is part of the centuries-old tradition. of Sardinia ..
